10th INTERNATIONAL JEAN SIBELIUS VIOLIN COMPETITION

RULES

I

The Sibelius Society and the Sibelius Academy are arranging the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki from November 21 to December 2, 2010. The competition is open to violinists of all nationalities born in or after 1980.

II

Written notice of participation must be sent to the Secretariat of the Competition to arrive by August 16, 2010 4.15 pm (local time). Address: 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, Sibelius Academy, P.O. Box 86, 00251 Helsinki, Finland. Address for private carriers: Töölönkatu 28, 00260 Helsinki, Finland. Applications sent by e-mail or fax will not be accepted.

The following enclosures must accompany the signed application:

a) the candidate’s birth certificate (or similar document) or a passport copy
b) a short report of music studies and concert activities
c) optional recommendations written specifically for this competition
d) a DVD-video (DVD +r or -r) containing the first movement of a concerto by Mozart (with piano or orchestra accompaniment) mentioned in the competition programme of the first round, a Capriccio by Paganini and the first movement of a concerto (with piano or orchestra accompaniment) mentioned in the programme of the final round. The DVD must be marked with the date and place of recording.
e) a photo (measuring at least 9 x 12 cm) . The photo may also be sent as a JPG file by e-mail to anna.krohn@siba.fi. Minimum resolution 300 dpi.

The application form or its enclosures will not be returned to the applicant. Applications that are incomplete or that do not reach the Competition Office by the date and time specified will not be considered.

Adjudicators nominated by the Competition Committee will perform the pre-selection on the basis of the application documents and DVD-videos. Those accepted for the competition will be informed in a letter dated September 16, 2010 at the latest.

The competitors (and their accompanists) invited to take part in the competition will be given accommodation in Helsinki free of charge during the entire period of the competition. Each competitor (and accompanist) covers his or her own travel expenses to Helsinki and back. However, the Competition Committee may, on application and at is own discretion, award travel grants for contestants not residing in Europe. The Secretariat will book hotel accommodation for those competitors (and accompanists) wishing to stay at a hotel at their own expense. Those needing a visa to enter Finland should obtain one themselves from the Finnish Consulate in their own country.

The order of playing in the competition will be decided by ballot at 12 o’clock noon on November 21, 2010 at the Sibelius Academy, address: Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9. Each competitor should be either personally present on this occasion or send a representative with a letter of authorisation. The order of performance will remain the same throughout the competition.

VI

Competition program

The competition has three rounds, all of which are open to the public. The competition pieces must be played from memory, apart from the sonata and the commissioned piece performed in the second round. The competitors may perform the works of the first and second rounds in any order they choose.

First Round
November 22-24, 2010

Approximately 40 contestants will be accepted for the first round.

1. One of the following works for solo violin by J.S. Bach:

Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in G minor
Grave and Fugue from Sonata in A minor
Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in C major

2. First movement of a violin concerto by Mozart:

no. 1 in B flat major KV 207, no. 2 in D major KV 211, no. 3 in G major KV 216, no. 4 in D major KV 218 or no. 5 in A major KV 219 , free-choice cadenza

3. Two Capriccios by Paganini of the competitor’s choice

Second Round
November 26-28,2010

A maximum of 20 contestants will be accepted for the second round.

1. One of the following sonatas for violin and piano:

Bartók (no. 1, 2), Beethoven (no. 1-6), Brahms (no. 1-3), Debussy, Fauré (A major),
Janáček, Mendelssohn (F major), Schubert (A major), Prokofiev (no. 1, 2), Ravel (1927),
Schnittke (no. 1, 2)

2. Sibelius:
Three movements taken from the following works:

Op. 79 Six pieces for violin and piano (Souvenir, Tempo di Menuetto, Danse Caractéristique, Sérénade, Tanz-Idylle, Berceuse)
Op. 106 Danses champêtres (1-5)
Op. 115 Four pieces for violin and piano (Auf der Heide, Ballade, Humoresque, Die Glocken)
Op. 116 Three pieces for violin and piano (Scène de danse, Danse caractéristique, Rondeau romantique)
or
Sonatina in E major Op. 80

3. A piece commissioned for the competition from Kaija Saariaho, which will be sent to the competitor along with the notification of acceptance. The duration of the piece is 6-9 minutes.

4. A virtuoso piece lasting not more than 12 minutes, by one of the following composers:

Ernst, Paganini, Saint-Saëns, Sarasate, Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski, Ysaÿe

The total duration of the repertoire for the second round must not be more than 60 minutes.

Final Round
November 30 –December 2, 2010

Six contestants will be accepted for the final round.

1. Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47

2. A violin concerto by one of the following composers:

Bartók (no. 2), Beethoven, Berg, Brahms, Bruch (G minor Op. 26), Mendelssohn (Op. 64), Nielsen, Prokofiev (no. 1, 2), Shostakovich (no. 1), Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky

VII

The Competition Committee will place accompanists at the competitors’ disposal free of charge. Before the first round, the competitors will have the right to rehearse for 1 hour and before the second round for 2 hours with the accompanist. Competitors may also bring their own accompanists at their own expense.

VIII

The jury consists of a Chairman, six international and two Finnish members.

IX

Prizes

The value of the prizes will be as follows:

  I   20.000 e
  II   15.000 e
  III   10.000 e

All other finalists will each receive a prize of 2.000 e. The jury reserves the right to distribute the prizes differently.

The Sibelius family will award a special prize of 1.000 euros for all competitors that qualify for the second round.

The city of Järvenpää donates a special prize of 1.500 euros.

Concert engagements in Finland and, if possible, in Scandinavia, will also be arranged as opportunities for the prize-winners in the competition. A finalist chosen by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will be soloist at the orchestra’s Independence Day concert on December 6, 2010. The first-prize winner agrees to be soloist at a concert of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra on December 10, 2010. Accommodation will be covered for the time required.

The prizes will be awarded after the final round on December 2, 2010.

XI

The organizers of the competition will have unlimited rights to broadcast the competition performances on radio and television, to make audio and video tapes, films and records and to show and distribute performance excerpts on the Internet and other data networks without paying any remuneration to the competitors or their accompanists.

XII

The original language of these rules is Finnish. Any disagreements arising from them will be resolved by reference to the Finnish text. The procedure in the event of a force majeure contingency will be decided by the Competition Committee.
