About us
The Sibelius Academy Open University is intended for anyone interested in acquiring musical education, regardless of age or previous educational experience. The Open University is a part of the Finnish higher education system and of the adult education field. Open University studies are a means for gaining general knowledge, developing vocational skills and preparing for degree studies. There are no requirements as to previous educational experience. The participants for the courses are chosen either by order of enrolment, or on the basis of a preliminary test. Tuition is generally in the evenings and at weekends, enabling studying alongside work. Tuition that is integrated with degree studies is during the daytime. The courses are given by Sibelius Academy teachers.
Open University studies are grouped into study units (each composed of several study modules), separate study modules, and public lectures (Musica generalia, Studia generalia). Furthermore, some Sibelius Academy basic education courses have places for Open University students.
Open University studies correspond to degree studies in Sibelius Academy. Open University courses and teachers are subject to the approval of the corresponding Academy department. Open University studies do not, however, lead to a degree. Studying for a degree is only possible after passing the entrance examination. When studying for a degree, students may use their completed Open University courses as part of their degree, depending on how their departments decide to recognize the courses.
