NMK2004
AUGUST
11 – 14, 2004
The
14th Nordic Musicological Congress (NMK2004) was held on 11–14
August 2004 at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki. The NMK congress
has served as an important forum for scientific discussion among
music researchers in the Nordic countries since 1948. The
two preceding congresses took place in
Aarhus (2000) and Lund (1996).
The
purpose of the Helsinki Congress was to widen the scope of music
scholarship and to broaden the conceptions of Nordic music research.
We were happy to welcome music researchers and others interested
in the field from all over the world; 240 participants from 22 countries
attended NMK2004.
The
congress was graced by four prominent and internationally acknowledged
keynote speakers: Carl Schachter, Richard Middleton, Estelle Jorgensen
and Hermann Danuser. Panel speakers from the Scandinavian countries
were invited to meet the challenge of discussing the themes of the
lectures. Furthermore, there were 160 parallel sessions with presenters
reporting on their current research.
Each
of the tightly packed congress days was divided into a morning and
an afternoon session. The day started with a keynote lecture and
panel discussion in the Sibelius Academy Concert Hall. The afternoons
were devoted to individual presentations, divided into five or six
parallel strands.
The
NMK2004 very much appreciate the support given by the Ministry of
Education of Finland, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland,
the Wihuri foundation, the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Cultural
Foundation, the Finnish-Swedish Cultural Foundation, and the Sibelius
Academy's Rector's Foundation.
The
organizing committee thanks you for participating the NMK2004.
See you soon!
