MAJ LIND PIANO COMPETITIOn

The Maj Lind Piano Competition is Finland’s leading piano competition. It is named after Maj Lind (1876-1942), a keen music-lover who, in her will, bequeathed some of her property to the Sibelius Academy “the promotion of the art of piano playing”. The first Maj Lind Competition was held in 1945 with the proceeds from a foundation established with the bequest and a competition was since been held at intervals of 1-4 years.

The first Helsinki International Maj Lind Competition was held in August 2002 and it proved extremely encouraging: the unusually demanding and to some extent unconventional repertoire attracted gifted pianists who made the competition a musical event of the highest standard. The second Helsinki International Maj Lind Competition was held in 2007.  In 2012 we will organize the third international competition.   The Competition Committee trusts that it will once again interest and attract young pianists just starting out in their careers, providing them with valuable experience. The Competition Committee also aims to create opportunities for laureates to perform in Finland after the Competition.
